Can you open a bank account without a NIN in Nigeria?
What the NIN requirement really means, why every Nigerian account needs it, and how to get yours if you do not have one yet.
The short answer: no, not any more. Every Nigerian bank account, whether from a traditional bank or a fintech like Aurra, requires a National Identification Number (NIN). This is a CBN regulation, not a company policy, and it applies across the industry. Here is what that means in practice.
Why the NIN is mandatory
The CBN's tiered Know Your Customer (KYC) rules require every account to be linked to a verified identity. The NIN is the national standard for that. It exists to stop money laundering, fraud and account takeover by making sure every account maps to one real, verified person. No licensed financial provider can skip it.
What happens during onboarding without one
On Aurra, the onboarding flow asks for your NIN directly in the chat. There is no skip button and no alternative path. If you try to proceed without it, the flow stops there. This is the same at every Nigerian bank: you will be asked for your NIN (or a BVN, which itself is tied to your biometrics) before an account is opened.
What if you do not have a NIN yet?
You can register for one at any NIMC enrolment centre nationwide, or at partner banks and centres. You will need a valid form of identification (a birth certificate, international passport, driver's licence, or an older national ID card) and your biometrics. Once registered, you receive a NIN slip, and the number can take a short while to sync across systems before it works for account opening.
How Aurra verifies it
During onboarding, you type your NIN into the chat. Aurra encrypts it, then verifies it against the national identity database. Once verified, your account is opened with a virtual account number you can receive money into. The NIN is stored encrypted and never shown back in plain text, on WhatsApp or the dashboard.

Common questions
Is there any account type without a NIN?
No. Even the lowest KYC tier (which has lower transaction limits) requires a NIN. Higher tiers may require additional documentation like a utility bill or address verification, but the NIN is the baseline for all of them.
How long does verification take?
Usually seconds, once the NIN is entered correctly and the identity database responds. If it fails, you can retry. A brand-new NIN may take a day or two to become available for verification.
Is my NIN safe?
It is encrypted at rest and never stored in plain text. Aurra does not show it back on any screen. For more on how Aurra handles sensitive data, see protecting your account and the privacy policy.
