Banking on WhatsApp: how it works in Nigeria
What WhatsApp banking actually is, what you can do from the chat, and why more Nigerians are skipping the app.
WhatsApp banking means running your money from the WhatsApp chat you already use all day. No new app to download, no separate password to remember. Aurra works this way: you message it, tap through guided screens, and every transaction is confirmed with your PIN.
What you can actually do
The full set of everyday money tasks, without leaving the chat:
- Send money to any Nigerian bank or fintech wallet.
- Buy airtime and data for yourself or anyone else.
- Pay cable TV, electricity, rent and school fees.
- Lock money away in a savings box.
- Check your balance and recent transactions.
- Freeze your account instantly if your phone goes missing.
How a transaction works
Most features open a WhatsApp Flow, which is a short screen with buttons instead of a wall of text. For a transfer, you pick the bank, type the account number, see the account name back, enter the amount, review the total, then type your 6-digit PIN. That is it. The same pattern covers airtime, data and bills.
Where the money sits
Aurra is not a bank. When you sign up you get a personal virtual account number held with a CBN-licensed payment partner. Anyone can send money to that account number from any bank, and it credits your wallet. Your balance is held by the licensed partner, not by Aurra.
Why people prefer it
It works on any phone that can run WhatsApp, including low-end ones. There is nothing to install and no storage to free up. Onboarding takes a few minutes, and you only need your NIN to verify your identity once.

Common questions
Is it safe?
Every transaction needs your PIN, your PIN is hashed and never stored in plain text, and five wrong attempts lock the account for 24 hours. See protecting your PIN.
Do I need the dashboard?
No. Everything can be done on WhatsApp. The dashboard is there for when you want the full history, beneficiaries and settings in one view.
What does it cost?
Deposits are free, and your first transfer of the day is free. See the pricing page for current transfer and bill fees.
